The Not Knowing Of Knowing

Being aware, or pure knowing, is a quality of this ‘no-thing’ true nature we are.

Only this pure, content-less knowing we are can know of the essential reality of itself and what appears to it.

It comes down to recognising that the realness of the room around us is not dependent on the colour of the wallpaper or its shape, that the mind recognises, but an indefinable quality that we are aware of.

In the same way, it comes down to recognising that what is aware of this undefinable realness is the same undefinable realness.

There are not two realnesses: the realness of what is aware and the realness of what we are aware of.

There is only one.

To borrow a phrase I liked from Tony Parsons, ‘We are “no-thing” that is everything, being something.’

‘No-thing’ can only be recognised by the pure knowing of it.

Our beautiful mind only recognises ‘somethings’.

It is simply a pattern recognition and labelling system that is mistaken for pure knowing, but it likes to think it knows knowing, nevertheless.

We must remind our beautiful mind that however clever it is, and however much we love it, it does not know knowing.

We have to remind it that this confusion arises from the deeply held belief that tries to make pure knowing a function of the limited body-mind and turns it into a separate self.

This belief has two elements:

A rational element appears in thoughts that attempt to limit the self and incite fear and lack.

An irrational element that shows up as a confused identification with bodily sensations as if this ‘no-thing’ reality we are is them.

The rational element of this belief is resolved by confirming that there is no rational basis for it.

Therefore, our beautiful mind can be open to the truth that it does not know pure knowing is a limited function of the body-mind and desist from pouring forth thoughts as if it did.

The irrational mistaken identification with bodily sensations can be resolved as we investigate our perception of them to see; it turns out that all there is to their appearance is the knowing of them and what we thought was a separate thing; in fact, this no-thing knowing reality we are.

As it becomes clear our beautiful mind cannot know knowing, it realises it can be open to living in the not-knowing of knowing and cease attempting to define it in any way, removing all limitations.

Even to define it as infinite is an unnecessary mental definition.

It becomes clear that understanding arises from pure knowing, and knowledge comes from the mind.

And we understand we are the reality of pure knowing itself, which the mind does not know, and this understanding grows.

As it permeates the layers of our lives, it goes beyond the intellect to be courageously heartfelt, and we can live increasingly free from the fear of mortality of the body-mind.
