Is Your Mind A Master Mind?
The mind is a pattern-matching machine. It perceives movement and contrasts, allowing us to appreciate patterns to help us navigate the world and enjoy its beauty. It is a truly remarkable instrument. However, if we identify with it, we risk defining ourselves by its mechanisms.
This leads us to compare and contrast ourselves with others quickly—the very essence of how the mind works can be turned against us. Beauty, love, and understanding may transform into comparison, competition, jealousy, and envy before we know it.
The only way out of this is to realise that we are the source of the mind. We recognise this by recognising that we are the presence of awareness that is not defined by the mind and is the source of understanding. The mind cannot be the source of understanding, but we need clarification about this point.
If we do not recognise it, we forget that our ever-present, never-changing, aware presence is the source of wise understanding. Instead, we entrust this responsibility to the mind, which becomes the master. We then confuse the mind’s pattern-matching ability with understanding. Consequently, this ignorance of our true nature transforms understanding into mental strategising and psychological attachment to try and control the resulting fear of being disconnected from the peaceful context of understanding. This may not show up until crucial moments.
